I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 9th 1969 in a middle-class family, the only son of Luiz Camillo Dobroruka (1929-1991) and Teresa Alvarez Dobroruka (1929-...). My father taught English at public schools in Rio de Janeiro, although he spent most of his life as commercial advisor to foreign counsulates (Britain and South Africa). My mother, even while fully committed to housekeeping, was always deeply interested in Judaism and history, specially Antiquity. I undoubtedly owe my early love of letters to her, as well as the first books and the support to read them; after many years this interest extended into ex-libris as well.
I studied at the Escola Corcovado, a German school in Rio, both in junior and high school, from 1975 to 1986. In 1987 I began a Law course at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC-RJ), but I only finished three terms; at the end of 1988 I followed my true inclination and got transferred to the History course, at the same institution. I finished the examinations at the end of 1992, and at the same time was admitted for an MPhil degree in Social and Cultural History, also at PUC-RJ. Under the supervision of Prof.Dr. Marcelo Jasmin, I concluded the dissertation and the oral exams in August 1995.
Since 1990, I have been studying the intersection between eschatology and philosophies of history, including utopian thought and millenarian movements. Such interests have, until now, generated one MPhil diss, one MSt, one DPhil thesis and four books, as well as seminar papers, articles and tutorings, all of which can be found at the appropriate links at this page.
Authors that I regard as most important for myself are found here.
I am a practisng Roman Catholic, and never found this to be a hindrance of any sort. In the PEJ people of all creeds can be found, as well as agnostics and atheists.
From 1993 to 1996 I worked as a high school teacher, at Anglo-Americano and Bahiense, both schools located at Rio de Janeiro. In 1996 I passed examinations to become a Lecturer in Ancient History at the Universidade de Brasília, where I have been working continously since February 1997.
On December 2005 I finished my DPhil degree in Theology while a member of Wolfson College (Oxford), working under the supervision of Profs. Christopher Rowland and Martin Goodman, with financial aid of Capes. I studied apocalyptic pseudonymous authorship by means of cross-cultural comparison with the similar phenomenon of Kardecist automatic writing.
I am currently Adjuct Professor and responsible for the research activities of the PEJ both at undergraduate and graduate levels.
After 2010 I became a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge, working with questions related to the Oracle of Hystaspes. I am also a member of The Ancient India and Iran Trust, Cambridge (2010 onwards).
