This group and the corresponding project originated in the "Programa Institucional de Bolsas de Iniciação Científica da Universidade de Brasília" (PIBIC-UnB, now PROIC-UnB), a funding program from the Brazilian federal government, between 2000 and 2001. As many undergraduates followed suit, the PEJ was officially founded on July 2001, although research properly related to the project's aims began sometime earlier.

If you want more information on the group and the on-going projects, go to the projects' page.

The PEJ has official recognition by the CNPq, as it appears in the Diretório dos Grupos de Pesquisa in Brazil.

Summing up the PEJ's main proposal, we can say that the group has devoted itself to the study of the intersections between religion, historiography and millenarian expectation in the Hellenistic-Roman world, understood in a broader sense, inasmuch as Byzantines, Persians and the Islam inherited, to some degree, aspects of what is now called "Hellenism".

To achieve its objectives, the group concentrates on five research branches:

* Apocalyptic literature in Antiquity and the Medieval Near East

* Hellenistic and Late Antiquity philosophy

* Historiography in Antiquity and the Eastern Middle Ages

* Primitive Christianity, Patristics and Gnosticism

* Religious syncretism in the Hellenistic-Roman world

Researchers and undergraduate students linked to the PEJ are for the most part concluding degrees in History or have just finished them; they intend, through work in the PEJ, to fill a serious gap in the field of the study of the relations between Judaism and Hellenism in Brazil. Consultants to the project are leading scholars in Ancient History, Theology or related areas.

The former blog listed on the menu (now a group of Google-based mailing lists), the PEJ also keeps three discussion groups (for registered members only) at pej-main@googlegroups.com and another two lists only for students supervised by the project leaders, respectively at pej-vicente@googlegroups.com and pej-henrique@googlegroups.com.
